A Quick Tour of Rome
Friday, April 11, 2008Corey and Devin continued traveling with us from Sorrento and after a stop in Pompeii the four of us found our way to Rome where we arrived at the central train station in the early evening. Our Pension was walking distance from the Metro subway and we were able to check in, unpack and grab a bite to eat in due time. Of course the boys wanted to go out exploring and have a beer or two. They asked me to join them, and being the good father that I am I said, well OK. Consequently I was a little ‘rough around the edges’ the next morning.
Plans for the next couple of days were to see some of the sites around Rome together with the Vatican and St. Peter’s Basilica. With the majority of us being Catholic we were all anxious to tour the Vatican, and with a guide book in hand, we weren’t disappointed. The Vatican Museum and Cathedral, with all of the history, was so impressive. We spent the entire day at the Vatican and later, over dinner, couldn’t quit talking about all that we had seen. Corey was the last one to leave the museum. The many statues, paintings, historical information and, of course, the Sistine Chapel left all of us with stiff necks. But no one minded. The great Italian wine with dinner helped ease the pain.
Next on the list was a day touring the Colosseum and the ruins of the Palentine which are all part of the old Roman Empire City. The weather was very nice and it made for a great day of reading about this history and seeing it first hand.
The 4 days in Sorrento and 4 days in Rome went fast. And so many fun stories to tell. It was great to see Corey & Devin and enjoy their energy level while experiencing these amazing sites with them. However, this time did come to an end and Corey needed to get back to school, Devin had to get back to find a’ real’ job after just graduating and we had to continue our adventure. It was time for Greece. Follow us there!
